Binoculars that are larger allow the observer to see more in low light. These binoculars will suit any occasion apart from when you need an optic that is lightweight & smaller.

Brightness is a function of magnification divided by lens diameter. We have chosen a 5:1 ratio (or greater) as the qualification. Eg. A 10×50 binocular is more powerful, but no less bright than a 8×42 (both are 5:1). For simplicity, we have not included the 8×42 in this category. Some binoculars are brighter still – 8×56 is 7:1 and these are exceptonally bright in low-light including astronomy
