There is a shortage of natural nesting sites, which is thought to be one of the major factors behind the decline of some of our once most-common birds. By putting up nest boxes, such as this, which replicates a bird’s natural nesting preferences, you can encourage them to breed near your home.

This nest box has an open entrance to allow room for your feathered tenants, such as robins and wrens, to gain access safely. It’s also made from a birch log, so it not only looks great, but also replicates natural nesting sites in the wild.

Tip: Because the front of this nest box is more open than most, choose your placement carefully as there is a greater risk of the nest being plundered by predators such as magpies, squirrels or cats. Be sure to place your nest box at least 2 – 4 metres high and facing north to northeast, avoiding strong sunlight and windy areas. Robins are known for picking well hidden nest sites!

Robin, Wren, Blackbird and more

Black Redstart, Robin, Spotted Flycatcher, Wren, Blackbird and Pied Wagtail For these species, you need an open fronted nest box and it needs to be hung lower – 1-2 metres is best. They also like it to be amongst some natural cover but the flight path cannot be blocked. Ideally, face the box between North and East to avoid the wet and sun. Tilt the box forward slightly when you hang it so that the roof can keep the rain out.
