The following is a helpful guide & not exhaustive instructions. You should not attempt the fitting of a corrector plate unless you are confident of success.
You will want to make sure the inside of the OTA & its mirror is clean & free from all broken glass. You will also want to clean the glass & mirrors with de-ionised distilled water & a clean lint-free cloth. Use the cloth around the radius of glass surfaces.
Fitting a replacement SCT corrector plate:
Technically, the corrector plate (CP) has a correct rotational position & they used to be made with that index mark. They now arrive without that factory markings. There is a way to get a replacement CP installed correctly without the index mark.
Firstly, ensure the replacement CP is not upside down. You can use a “reflection test” to find the side that has been specially shaped:
Lay the corrector plate flat on a clean, dark, soft lint-free cloth. Look at the reflection of a straight overhead light (like a window frame or a tube light) in the CP glass. Slowly move your head so the reflection moves towards the very edge of the plate. On one side of the glass, the reflection will stay perfectly straight. On the other side, the line will look slightly “wavy” or bent as it reaches the edge. The side where the reflection looks wavy must face inwards, towards the main mirror.For the rotation, since these are standalone parts and don’t have marks to line up with your primary mirror, it will take some trial and error. You’ll need to test it on a star; if the star looks like an oval when you’re out of focus, just rotate the glass 90 degrees and check again. You might need to make smaller adjustments until the star looks like a perfect, concentric circle.
